TEFANZ 25th Anniversary Conference and AGM 2024
Join us in celebrating 25 Years of teacher education advocacy and scholarship at the Teacher Education Forum Aotearoa New Zealand (TEFANZ) Conference and AGM. The University of Auckland will host TEFANZ Conference 2024 on the 11th and 12th of July. The theme of the conference is:
‘Educating the professional’ or ‘training the worker’? Keeping sight of Teacher Education in times of change
It is widely accepted that a key characteristic of a ‘professional’ includes the centrality of a specialised body of knowledge that is developed through a sustained period of professional education and training. The TEFANZ 2024 Conference sets out to provoke conversations around what it means to be ‘educated as a teacher’ and what it is to be ‘trained to be a teacher’. At a time where teacher education is subject to a plethora of political postures and promises, it is crucial to consider the inherent tensions within, and the purpose of, teacher education in Aotearoa New Zealand.
We invite delegates to contribute to this conversation on the future of teacher education through sharing research findings, innovative practices and insights into the moral and political nature of our work.

Jacoba Matapo
Pro Vice-Chancellor Pacific
Auckland University of Technology
Biography
Jacoba Matapo has ancestral ties to Siumu Samoa and Leiden Holland. Jacoba is an Associate Professor in Pacific Early Childhood Education and is the first Pro Vice-Chancellor Pacific at Auckland University of Technology. She has over 15 years of educational leadership experience spanning University, ITE, and ECE contexts. She has led key Pasifika education projects, anchoring Pacific philosophy for transformation in education. Jacoba is deeply invested in Pacific ECE nationwide and advancing culturally affirming education practices across Aotearoa. Her Pacific research affiliations include advisory roles with MoE (Pacific) and MoH, and she serves as an advisory board member for TLRI.
John Morgan
Head of School of Critical Studies in Education
University of Auckland
Biography
John Morgan has worked in university-based Teacher Education in 4 universities since 1999 (following a decade teaching geography in London schools). From 2000 to 2012 he trained over 250 geography teachers at the University of Bristol at a time when the models of teacher education were shifting. He also worked at Futurelab (running a project on educational change funded by Microsoft). As the Head of the School of Critical Studies in Education at the University of Auckland, John is well placed to offer a ‘global’ perspective on the past, present and futures of ITE.
